Respite may be an area that can be confusing for many people transitioning to the NDIS. The NDIA now recognises the importance of carers and families maintaining their health, wellbeing and resilience in order to meet the needs of people with a disability.

There are three levels of respite-like supports available for funding as part of plans:

  • Level 1: 7 to 14 days per year to allow the carer to attend key activities
  • Level 2: 14 to 28 days per year and includes a strategy to build capabilities for future independence.
  • Level 3: Equivalent of 28 days per year, when the carer provides support most days and informal support is at risk of not continuing due to the intensity of the support required or severe behavioural issues.

If you are eligible for respite funding, it will include funding for accommodation in a group residence for a short period of time – typically up to 14 days at a time. It will also include support for self-care, food, and activities.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Another benefit of the Short Term Accomodation is the supported independent living. As a client at our facility, we provide support to our clients to help them live as independently as possible. We will provide experience and friendly support workers in the house 24/7 to assist with daily living tasks. Generally, this is all done with a focus on developing your skills so you can live as independently as possible.

There are three levels of SIL

  • Lower need – provides supervision of living arrangements and is not usually provided 24/7.
  • Standard need – provides 24/7 support including active assistance and/or supervision of most daily tasks, overnight sleepovers.
  • Complex need – provides highly frequent assistance to the individual with: managing challenging behaviours that require intensive positive behaviour support, continual active assistance with all daily tasks, active management of complex medical needs, active support 24/7 including overnight.
